Jet Dreams on Toronto Island (Part 2)
Secret environmental assessment says jets will harm Toronto’s waterfront and residents By Ian Darragh

"A secret environmental assessment found that allowing jets will increase air pollution, raising the risk of heart disease, lung cancer and respiratory tract tumours for residents living near the airport.

The Toronto Port Authority (TPA) commissioned AECOM Canada Ltd. to conduct the EA in 2017, but it only became public on March 11, 2026 as the result of a freedom of information request from No Jets T.O. (The TPA also withheld from the public an environmental assessment of options for runway end safety areas, an aviation safety standard mandated by Transport Canada to prevent aircraft from overshooting runways.)"

Jet Dreams on Toronto Island (Part 2) - Spacing Toronto

This is the continuation of Jet Dreams on Toronto Island (Part 1). The chief obstacle to expanding Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is geography – the tiny size of the airport and its location on an island unconnected by a fixed link to the mainland. If there were ever a collision between two jets, theContinue reading "Jet Dreams on Toronto Island (Part 2)"

Jet Dreams on Toronto Island (Part 1)
What would it cost, who will pay, and who benefits? By Ian Darragh
"Neither the province nor the Toronto Port Authority have provided an estimate of the capital cost, nor the full environmental impact of extending the runway for jets.

Neither have they provided a business case that there is pent-up passenger demand. In fact, Billy Bishop has not yet returned to its pre-Covid passenger levels of 2.8 million in 2018 and 2.77 million in 2019. In 2025, Billy Bishop served 1.75 million passengers."

Jet Dreams on Toronto Island (Part 1) - Spacing Toronto

Premier Doug Ford and the Toronto Port Authority, the federal agency that owns Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, have been extraordinarily secretive about their plans to modify the island airport for jets. Spacing has been asking for a detailed plan for more than a month since Premier Doug Ford announced that “one way or another,Continue reading "Jet Dreams on Toronto Island (Part 1)"

I know this #spacingmagazine article about revitalizing park space in the city is focused on Toronto, but there’s a lot other cities (like my #ldnont) can learn from it too. https://spacing.ca/toronto/2025/08/07/toronto-parks-need-a-reboot/
Toronto Parks Need a Reboot - Spacing Toronto

Recent Auditor General reports exposed deep-rooted inefficiencies and systemic issues in Toronto’s Parks & Recreation (P&R) Division. Despite these challenges, P&R is staffed by many dedicated public servants who understand the problems facing Toronto’s parks and work tirelessly to address them within innumerable constraints. Chronic underfunding, poor oversight, and outdated management have left parks visiblyContinue reading "Toronto Parks Need a Reboot"

New issue of #SpacingMagazine this quarter! Focus is on the #OntarioLine and I am thinking that the #OTrain in #Ottawa could do with similar attention!

NEW ISSUE: The Ontario Line - Spacing Toronto

Our new issue’s cover section theme echoes our previous one a little. We have gone from Ontario Place to the Ontario Line. The similar names are not entirely coincidental — the Ontario Line was named because it will start (or end, depending on your point of view) near Ontario Place and go to near the […]

Cars as predators - Spacing Toronto

I am currently on sabbatical leave in Mumbai, India. Last week, I went to an eye-opening lecture at IIT Bombay by Dr. Sunetro Ghosal, “Immoral Wilderness in Urban Spaces.” He raised provocative questions not just about where leopards should live, but what we understand a city to be and how we measure risk. I came […]

Hey, who else here is keeping an eye on what #SpacingMedia is doing? I think the new issue of #SpacingMagazine re: #urbaninfrastructure is out, and the cover topic is #OntarioPlace ! Details from John Lorinc:

NEW ISSUE: Ontario Place - Spacing Toronto

A decade of neglect has transformed Ontario Place into an accidental playground. As you will discover in our cover section, what was once intended as a provincial showcase has evolved into a destination for walkers, cyclists, swimmers, paddleboarders, partiers, birdwatchers, lake watchers, and human watchers, along with movie- and concert-goers to its more established venues.
