Given that search is dead and I'm interested in good rather than free, does anyone know where's a good source for woodworking plans? I'm failing to find a table (among other things) for the garden and am considering building one...

Me trying to get information in an online search about how water is a byproduct of propane combustion is like listening to ten drunk do-it-yourselfers arguing affably about it ("the molecules are father apart!" "it's condensation!") except one of them is an actual propane plumber who knows what they're talking about, but I don't know which one.

Thanks AI "enhanced" search.

Searching for a book called "The Natural Way to Music" by Jim D'Ville and Bill Keith. No results, but Amazon did provide this immensely helpful list of related searches I could try…

I doubt these are even related by marriage or adoption.

I'm just looking for a replacement for my 6 year old #Garmin #Forerunner235. Roughly with the same feature set, but not restricted to any brand.

It seems a doomed task.
A normal internet search turns up countless list of the "best" sport watches without a foundation why.
Searching Amazone leads to countless no-name watches. It totally frustrating

I'm considering buying an Apple watch out of frustration. There I would have more than the features I want but the battery runtime is disqualifying 😠

Me in 2000: Google is the new Alta Vista! [in that it has become my go-to search engine]

Me in 2024: Google is the new Alta Vista! [in that everything is much harder to find than it should be and the relevance of results is plummeting]

1. Find information that already exists for free (or that is extremely cheap to get)*.

2. Either put it behind a paywall or wrap it in ads until it is virtually unusable (or both).

3. Find a way to increase the search ranking of your version.

This is not a business model, this is ruining the web for money.

* ~ Also, some aren't even doing this (e.g., like a reverse phone lookup service that PRETENDS to have data it doesn't).

"But SEO is just giving people what they want!"

False.

Patient zero: if I search the web for a phone number, what I *want* is to know whose phone number it is.

The top results should be pages that contain that phone number and information about what person or business it belongs to (including, if it's a business, their own web site).

What I don't want—what NOBODY wants—are spammy, scammy, for-pay reverse phone lookup companies.

Not all SEO is bad.

It's just every bit of SEO that was ever performed on anything online that came above the thing you were actually looking for on Google or Bing that is bad.

When writing “how to” instructions about dangerous topics or emergencies, DO NOT start with a three-paragraph pre-amble.

No one will read your article in advance. Your greedy SEO padding will ensure that people will find your article when they are panic-googling, but then as they scroll madly and hyperventilate, your wall of lukewarm prose will cost someone their goddamn life.

Stop writing for bots and search engines. Start writing for people.

[product] is very popular, and [whole paragraph of vamping].

However, [first mention of problem].

[800 more words that help no one].
