Children of Afghanistan Under Bombardment... Pakistani Military Regime Adds Another Massacre to its Record of Violations
#RadioLiberty #Afghanistan #Pakistan
The dawn of this day was no different from any other for dozens of Afghan families in the provinces of Khost, Kunar, and Baktika. Everyone slept peacefully in their simple homes before Pakistani fighter jets ripped through the silence of the night, turning safe houses into rubble and children’s dreams into blood and dismemberment.
In a new crime that shakes human conscience, Pakistan's military regime launched brazen airstrikes targeting civilian areas within Afghanistan, resulting, according to the spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, Mawlawi Zabihullah Mujahid, in the deaths of 13 civilians and injuries to 14 others. Most heartbreakingly, the majority of the victims were among the most vulnerable and innocent; the list of those killed included eleven children, women, and an elderly person, while there were also numerous women and children among the wounded.
The images coming from the Spera district in Khost province require little explanation: bodies of children are carried from beneath the rubble, destroyed homes, and mothers bidding farewell to their sons who perished under the roofs of their houses. These scenes capture the scale of the tragedy and reveal the nature of the targets; the bombs did not fall on military sites or battlefields, but on civilian homes that possess nothing more than the right to life.
Targeting defenseless civilians, especially children, women, and the elderly, cannot be justified by any political or security pretext. International humanitarian law criminalizes attacks on civilians and prohibits targeting residential areas. Furthermore, violating the sovereignty of an independent state and bombing its territory constitutes aggressive behavior that threatens security and stability throughout the entire region.
This attack is not an isolated incident but comes in the context of a series of assaults for which villages close to the so-called Durand Line and innocent residents of #Afghanistan have paid the price. Each time, the same tragedy repeats itself: children are killed, families displaced, and homes destroyed, while the suffering of the victims stands as testimony to the failure of military solutions in resolving disputes and outstanding issues.
The blood of the children spilled in #Khost, #Kunar, and #Baktika is not merely numbers in news bulletins; it is innocent lives snuffed out without guilt, and wounds that will remain present in the memory of the Afghan people for a long time to come.
From here emerges the responsibility of the international community, human rights organizations, and humanitarian agencies to condemn these crimes and work to prevent their recurrence, rather than being content with silence which encourages aggressors to continue their violations as has happened in the past.
These airstrikes have once again proven that the first victims of wars and military policies are the peoples and innocent civilians. While Afghanistan looked forward to establishing security, stability, and rebuilding what decades of conflict had destroyed, these attacks add a new chapter of suffering to a long record of pain.
The question will remain present before the world: What fault was there in the children who were killed under the rubble of their homes? And what danger did they pose that their houses should be targeted by bombardment? These are questions rockets cannot answer, but they will haunt those responsible for this crime and reveal the truth of what transpired on that bloody dawn.
