Having recently finished watching the last of the Babylon 5 movies recently, Jessie Earl (Jessie Gender) and Vera Wylde have turned their attenion to Battlestar Galactica (the 2004 reboot) on the Frak This podcast. Developed by Star Trek alum, Ronald D. Moore, Battlestar Galactica was contemporaneous with Lost. While both shows were cultural touchpoints of their era, BSG had lower viewership, perhaps in part due to airing on cable in the U.S. in the era prior to the streamers. It's likely the number of people who knew of the show from the Bears, Beats, Battlestar routine in The Office exceeded the number of people who saw the show as it aired.
Battlestar built on the arc-driven narrative employed by Babylon 5 but included new elements such as gritty realism, hand held shots, and casting choices that spawned objections from some fans of the original series.
The Frak This podcast uses the format that Vera and Jessie have developed over the last few years. One presenter recaps the episode while the two discuss particular plot beats. After the recap is finished, they talk about their overal feelings about the episode and cover anything that didn't really fit in the scope of the episode recap.
Jessie Earl is a filmmaker and pioneer in the area of video essays. She has an extensive background in SciFi and media criticism with an LGBTQIA+ perspective. She's seen Battlestar Galactica before but it's been a while and she's re-evaluating her perspective on it.
Vera Wylde is perhaps best known for running the channel Council of Geeks on Youtube where she does a lot of Doctor Who reviews and analysis. She's new to Battlestar Galactica and is analyzing the show through not only her usual perspective but as someone coming to it fresh in 2025.
I provided the direct link to the podcast above but you can also listen to it on YouTube if you prefer.
