Israel drops charges against soldiers accused of prisoner abuse

The Israeli military said it is dropping charges against five soldiers accused of sexually abusing a Palestinian detainee in an encounter partially caught on camera. The decision on Thursday comes as much of the country’s attention is focused on the war with Iran. The leaked video of the abuse was aired last year by Israel’s Channel 12 and purported to show an assault in which the soldiers sodomized the Palestinian detainee from Gaza with a knife. The arrest of the soldiers in 2024 prompted anger from hard-line ultranationalists, while members of Israel’s far-right government called the investigation into the allegations an affront to their service.

One of the prisoners who died in the riot, had recently petitioned for a writ of habeas corpus. He claimed the cops had beat a confession out of him and he had hospital records to prove it.

An Associated Press investigation into prison labor in the United States found that prisoners who are hurt or killed on the job are often being denied the rights and protections offered to other American workers. These prisoners are being placed in dangerous jobs, sometimes with little or no training. They pick up trash along busy highways, fight wildfires, and operate heavy machinery. They work on industrial-sized farms and meat-processing plants tied to the supply chains of large, iconic companies, from McDonald’s to Target. But incarcerated workers and their families often have little or no recourse when things go wrong.
