French mayors face violence and intimidation from xenophobic far-right groups
Mayors have long been highly appreciated among elected officials in France. But they are under attack as never before from far-right political groups. The groups' opposition to immigration is the driving force, but education and agricultural policies are other flashpoints. The mayor of a small resort town on the Atlantic coast of France resigned and moved away after his house and two cars were set on fire in the middle of the night. The arson followed months of death threats over plans to relocate a refugee center near a school. Incidents like this are a growing concern for France’s internal security agency, which views them as a threat to democracy.
