A promise to an African grandmother: Shining a light on Germany's colonial past

Germany has over the past years made strides in coming to terms with a dark era of its past, the colonial rule of large swaths of Africa. Immigrants from Africa such as Mnyaka Sururu Mboro are helping shed a light on that part of history. He is driven by the promise he gave his grandmother when he left Tanzania almost 50 years ago. He told her he would recover the head of local chieftain Mangi Meli, who was killed by German colonists for opposing their rule. The head is believed to have been taken to Germany by soldiers. Mboro has been searching for it to this day.

<p>This year, we are celebrating the 125th anniversary of the passage of the <em>Yukon Act</em> (June 13, 1898), but if we want to get a more complete picture of Yukon history let’s add a couple of zeroes to that number, and go back 12,500 years, or more, to the arrival of the first Canadians. Yes, the first people to occupy Canada were in what we call the Yukon today.</p>
