Tiny, 45 base long #RNA can make copies of itself
RNA, like its more famous relative DNA, can carry #genetic information. But it can also fold up into three-dimensional structures that act as catalysts. These two features have led to the suggestion that early life was protein-free, with RNA handling both heredity and catalyzing a simple metabolism.
Self-copying RNAs may have been a key stop along the pathway to life.

Rett syndrome is a severe developmental disorder triggered by mutations in the MECP2 gene, which researchers have recently discovered compromises the structural integrity of developing brain blood vessels. This #genetic mutation causes the overexpression of a specific #microRNA that breaks down the tight seals of the blood-brain barrier, resulting in vascular leakiness that disrupts neural function.

Scientists discover genetics behind leaky brain blood vessels in Rett syndrome

By showing the problem derives from genetic mutations that lead to overexpression of a microRNA, MIT researchers’ study points to potential treatment.

New study clarifies how temperature shapes sex development in leopard gecko

Researchers have long known that temperature can determine whether some reptiles develop as male or female, but this process is not well understood in lizards and snakes. A new study in leopard geckos offers the first detailed look at how this works in a squamate reptile. The researchers found that differences between males and females begin at the genetic level before any physical changes appear and identified the key developmental window when temperature decides sex.

#SpiderSilk-making organs evolved due to a 400-million-year-old #genetic oops
#Spiders and silk go hand in hand, but spinnerets may exist thanks to an ancient error
A close look at the genetics and development of #spinnerets — spiders’ silk-making organs — reveals that an early arachnid doubled all of its DNA hundreds of millions of years ago. The findings suggest key, doubled genes were responsible for the #evolution of spinnerets.

Spider silk-making organs evolved due to a 400-million-year-old genetic oops

An ancient ancestor of spiders and relatives doubled its genome about 400 million years ago, setting the stage for the evolution of spinnerets.
