I've been a bit quiet here (there and everywhere) but this is something I've just written on the role of unpaid carers.

A failed care system, relentless cuts, austerity and the notoriously perilous 'transition' process (when you shift from child to adult social services) is a shameful mix.

It leaves families like Elliott's in a precarious position.

Such a stunning shot of Christian Raphael, a music fan from Cambridge.

I loved editing this issue and cover story about a day in Christian's life. He's a cool guy who loves music and bright clothes. He's also non-verbal, has complex learning disabilities and was in hospital with Covid last year.

There's not enough coverage of complex/profound disabilities, Christian helps us rectify that.

Just because I love this smiley photo of Elliott and it doesn't display on the link in my last toot, here's a screen grab from the Tortoise website.

Still getting to grips with all this so I don't think the image showed in my previous post - but it's a beautiful one of Elliott so here it is again.

Here's the link again too: https://www.tortoisemedia.com/file/a-place-for-elliott/

A place for Elliott - Tortoise

Why this story? When covid vaccinations began, we all breathed a sigh of relief; finally, things could start to get back to normal. But for around 32,000 disabled people in the UK, that freedom was denied. People who struggle with getting vaccinated have been forgotten and the bureaucracy of the health system seems unable to …

@autisticrealms always use hashtags like #PMLD / #PIMD. Mastodon searches on hashtags rather than algorithms. Looks like #PIMD might return some results.

@brainpilgrim yes I didn't think I could go that wrong but equally it is bizarre considering the news is saying how many people are here.....
I guess some #actuallyautistic people are able to advocate for themselves and are joining for social reasons then may be carers / parents / teachers / charities for those with #PMLD, #PIMD will probably join on here soon too.....maybe?

Mapping the Mastodon Migration: Is It a One-Way Trip or an Each-Way Bet for Science Twitter? - Absolutely Maybe

Like many people, I opened a Mastodon account on the weekend the Musk era began on Twitter. This post picks up from…

Absolutely Maybe
@brainpilgrim I have just put out a tweet on twitter, i wasn't sure how it worked here as i know this server neurodifferent is about neurodivergence so didn't know if i needed to join another server to connect with those talking about #PMLD, #PIMD or whether they all join up ?
@brainpilgrim I am more than shocked and saddened - that is a whole population of people 😠
I taught those with PMLD and PIMD for 20 years, that is what inspired my blog #languagematters

'Profound' in relation to those with PMLD / PIMD

For these children with the most complex, profound intellectual and multiple disabilities there was never a need for any words between us at all, there was just a deep understanding and a connection between us as two individuals (and lots of sensory play!).

'Profound autism' does not exist - rather there are autistic individuals with PMLD / PIMD

I would advocate that those described as having ‘profound autism’ are actually autistic individuals WITH profound and intellectual multiple disabilities. Everyone is an individual regardless of neurotype, everyone has their own specific needs. For Autistic people with profound intellectual and multiple difficulties these needs are highly complex and may require constant high level of care and support.
