1/2 Well, as I say, I’m in favour of responsible #openness and scaling-small - although I find the #pluriverse a more subtle and productive concept for thinking about the #culture and #communities we want than the miniverse:

I also understand why many of those Matusek et al map as being part of this post-naïve generation of #internet builders – people like Joshua Citarella of Doomscroll and Do Not Research – are keen to by-pass the traditional ‘liberal’ gatekeepers of the ‘old elite’: #universities, academic presses, peer-reviewed #journals. These people position themselves instead as independent and self-organised intellectuals-come-influencers. However, as Morgane Billuart observes in Becoming the Product (https://www.setmargins.press/books/becoming-the-product/), ‘the use of #self – one’s voice, face, and opinions – long rejected by traditional academic standards of rigor, has proven highly effective’ in this new alternative ecosystem.

Stepping outside the algorithm

“The idea that billions of people should gather, speak and be governed under one algorithmic roof has already proven to be not only dangerous but unsustainable.”

It took us a while to really integrate Mastodon into our #Fediverse and #Pluriverse mindsets.

A few days ago, we tooted for the thousandth time. To mark this milestone, here are a few thoughts:

‘We cannot simply dust off old formulas to repeat; we need take the time necessary to invent a new strategy and new organizational forms adequate to the current conjuncture.’

Michael Hardt calls for a radical reinvention of political strategy in his contribution to Berliner Gazette’s Pluriverse of Peace series:

Democratic institutions in the West are increasingly resorting to repression to address social issues. This is particularly evident in protests for climate justice and against the war in Gaza, revealing that these institutions are unwilling or unable to develop solutions to the pressing problems facing our world. Looking back at the 1970s clarifies this challenge. However, as Michael Hardt argues in his contribution to the “Pluriverse of Peace” series, inspiration for implementing alternatives can be found in recent movements that have demanded and practiced radical democracy.

Australia's semantic struggles over a "one and only" reality or a pluriverse?
From the 'heart of darkness' to the “sanitised” articles of sub/urban place names.

"Some (Wikipedia) editors told us they felt it was their responsibility to include First Nations’ perspectives, even though they met with heavy resistance. One, Lucas, had repeatedly tried to include First Nations place names, often unsuccessfully. He no longer edits Wikipedia. “I just ran out of energy for it”...One or two editors “were going around removing Aboriginal place names from all the articles about Australia and Australian places”.

We analysed 35,000 Wikipedia entries about Australian places. Some sanitised history, others privileged fiction over reality

The first project to examine Australian Wikipedia entries finds topics such as Australian history and use of First Nations place names are sparking ‘edit wars’, with some serious omissions.

@pettter @ChrisMayLA6 I might add that degrowth is in large parts from Europe for the global north and that it is also about creating space for other development models in the sense of the #pluriverse and #tapestryofalternatives. No more cookie cutter 'development paradigms' based on #extractivism and #externalisation, rather reparations, loss and damage funds and technology transfer. That might make it attractive.
