"To what extent do identity politics require a standard internal to existing society against which to pitch their claims, a standard that not only preserves capitalism from critique but sustains the invisibility and inarticulateness of class, not accidentally, but endemically?"
Wendy Brown, "Wounded Attachments", 1993.

Democratic institutions in the West are increasingly resorting to repression to address social issues. This is particularly evident in protests for climate justice and against the war in Gaza, revealing that these institutions are unwilling or unable to develop solutions to the pressing problems facing our world. Looking back at the 1970s clarifies this challenge. However, as Michael Hardt argues in his contribution to the “Pluriverse of Peace” series, inspiration for implementing alternatives can be found in recent movements that have demanded and practiced radical democracy.
