🇺🇸: The pied avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta) is a wader species in the avocet and stilt family (Recurvirostridae). It is a medium-sized bird, measuring 42–46 cm in length. The pied avocet is easily recognized by its striking black-and-white plumage, long greyish legs, and its characteristically upcurved, slender bill. Its breeding range extends across coastal and inland wetlands in Europe, Central Asia, and parts of Africa. During winter, it migrates to southern Europe and sub-Saharan Africa. Like other waders, the pied avocet primarily feeds on aquatic invertebrates. Its diet includes insects, crustaceans, and small worms, which it sweeps from shallow water using its curved bill.

🇩🇪: Der Säbelschnäbler (Recurvirostra avosetta) ist eine Watvogelart aus der Familie der Säbelschnäbler und Stelzenläufer (Recurvirostridae). Er ist ein mittelgroßer Vogel mit einer Körperlänge von 42–46 cm. Der Säbelschnäbler ist leicht an seinem auffälligen schwarz-weißen Gefieder, den langen grauen Beinen und dem charakteristisch nach oben gebogenen, schlanken Schnabel zu erkennen. Sein Brutgebiet erstreckt sich über Küsten- und Binnenfeuchtgebiete in Europa, Zentralasien und Teilen Afrikas. Im Winter zieht er in südlichere Regionen Europas sowie nach Afrika südlich der Sahara. Wie andere Watvögel ernährt sich der Säbelschnäbler vorwiegend von wirbellosen Wassertieren. Zu seiner Nahrung zählen Insekten, Krebstiere und kleine Würmer, die er mit seinem gebogenen Schnabel aus seichtem Wasser herausfiltert.
