Although the building has been knocked around over the years, Roman tile banding can also be seen in the donjon of Colchester Castle, itself built on the foundation of the Roman temple of Claudius. By building in this style (and it's location), the Norman builders were imbuing imperial symbolism; they were the new Romans.
