2(1 + 1 ÷ 2) = ? Many Don’t Understand This BASIC Math Concept! (Order of Operations)

YouTube
@SmartmanApps Does 3-1¾ = 1¼ or = 2¾? Most people might say the former, but implied addition should really be treated with the same precedence as regular operators, and evaluated left-to-right. So the correct answer is actually 2¾! It's OK if you got this wrong, because the way it is written is ambiguous. Really the expression should be written 3-(1+¾). #pemdas #bodmas

PEMDAS MUTHADUCKAHS!

but honestly. just friggin use it. thank ye kindly!

Any #math #teachers want to relitigate #PEMDAS

The criticisms of #BEDMAS are just the surface of them problems with #math classes in elementary/high school. They don't actually teach math, they teach steps and memorization. Students are unprepared to deal with novel problems, because they're taught to memorize, not understand. And this is just the surface of the problems with school in general.

#BEDMAS sounds like a holiday where you get to spend the whole day sleeping in, and I am so on board with that right now... (b s) #PEMDAS #PunktVorStrich
@Hyphlosion
Yes, it's click-bait. Without context, or better still brackets or a solidus, the statement is ambiguous and either/both answers are equally valid/invalid.

When a #YouTube thumbnail has a simple math equation and says most people get it wrong, I can’t help but feel like I fell for clickbait or something.

What do you mean, many people don’t get the Order of Operations?

I suck so bad at #Math. I hate Math with the burning passion of the heat of a thousand suns, and haven’t gone to school in years….and EVEN I can tell you that 10 ÷ 2 x 5 = 25.

So anyway, I solve the answer in my head and wait for the video to tell me why I’m wrong and why a lot of people get it wrong.

Nope, I was right.

But why is this bugging me so much that I was right? Because I was hoping for there to be some sort of trick or something, like an exception to a rule, that makes it a common mistake.

Turns out that, according to the video, it’s because some people take PEMDAS a little too seriously and think you have to multiply before dividing because M comes before D in PEMDAS.

I’ve never heard of that before, but alrighty then.

I always said it is a superposition until the problem is fully defined. So both answers are correct until the definition is completed. #PEMDAS #PEJMDAS
