a photo of Jo's pedalboard, containing four dpFX builds. Can you spot all of them? 😉

Pete from Finland 🇫🇮 just received his OLETHROS preamp. He was so excited with its sound that sent me this photo. It's always nice to receive such photos from happy musicians that enjoy dpFX's creations 😃

Re: making the switch on effect pedals as quiet as possible

In my experience Boss JFET-based bypass system is the quietest. So when the relay-based switcher I built did not fit the customer, I recommended Boss LS-2 instead.

They've ordered it, we tried it the other day, and.. it pops!! I was so surprised!

Thankfully they ordered other pedals to try as well: JHS Mute switch and a Dunlop Volume X Mini.

JHS Mute uses a mechanical 3pdt, but it is much more quiet than both my relay-based solution and LS-2. Crazy! I guess it's a special kind of footswitch.

The Volume Pedal would do the trick as well of course, but it's a different workflow & price.

And the quietest mute switch pedal? Boss TU-3 I had lying around. Yeah, the tuner!

So many head-scratchers with what should have been solved at least 50 years ago! A freaking mute switch!!

6. Embedded patch bays

To simplify routing, just run a cable snek under the board 🐍

7. Underside mounts using magnets

Instead of screwing things into the wood, route circular pockets and put magnets in them on a grid. Use magnetic adapters to mount things (PSUs, pedals, reverb tanks) on the underside of the board.

New article! Wrote up a recent improvised build of a stereo-switcher controlled using a remote.

Finishing an AB-switching system for a friend. All the signal routing happens in the larger box using a relay. That one is supposed to live on the underside of a pedalboard.

The control signal for it is a gate. In this case it comes from a flip-flop in a smaller box that would live on the player-facing side of the board.

Both circuits are built with veroboards and an awful spaghetti of wires. It's cool not to have to plan every detail before soldering, but also terrible to look at 😅

Kind of last minute I realized that the relay has two switches, so I've made it work in stereo too.

Quick write-up of a very common mixer circuit. It's used in RDRPT as well:

Mixers sum two or more signals together. They are everywhere. They are built into the majority of effects and synths, including the core of RDRPT. Here is a breakdown of that circuit.
