The #parable of the old #farmer and the #physician.

An elderly farmer went in to see his #GP for a physical (probably had to be trussed by his wife to get him to see a #doc when he wasn't sick or injured.)

The #FamilyPractitioner asked him if he raised sheep. He had, he said. Well, the #doctor asked, if he had a dozen sheep, and one found a hole in the fence and escaped, how many sheep do you have left?

The farmer snorted, "None!"

Do not say: "There is a new coffee shop around the corner, perhaps I shall drink its coffee some day."
Nay, instead, go straightway to the coffee shop, and drink its coffee, for it may be gone tomorrow.

Likewise, do not say: "Ah, if I had only drunk more coffee from the old coffee shop, for I shall not see its like again."
Instead, rejoice that you were able to drink even one coffee from that shop, for no man knoweth how long a coffee shop shalt last.

(Too many parables in the language of the King James, I know, but I had to.)

Le Guin and Zamyatin follow Foucault in my exploration of the parable of the two valleys with Claude, part 8 of 13.

We explore how speculative fiction often anticipates complex philosophical theories and the prescience of 'We'.

I ask Claude how Michel Foucault might consider the parable of the 2 valleys.

I also realise that I lose at least an hour a day just managing my blog posts and social media, as I'd regained that time recently due to spotty internet connectivity owing to a snowstorm in New England.

Today's pick: Parable of the Sower (1557) - Pieter Bruegel the Elder. #art #Bruegel #Parable

I continue my discussion with Claude about the Two Valleys parable to talk about the economy of moral control.

Thomas Gouge, a Puritan minister, reflecting on the rich man and Lazarus, warns that unmerciful wealth is spiritually perilous. The rich man’s sin was not luxury alone, but withholding even crumbs from the needy. Gouge presses his hearers to be “free and forward, liberal and bountiful” toward the poor—treating generosity not as optional kindness, but as a chief Christian duty.

First in a series where I ask Claude to analyse the Two Valleys parable from various perspectives.

Sure, you could have run the stories through yourself. In fact, you still can, but this was the start of my dialogue. I centre the dialogue on my anti-Enlightenment sentiments.
