I might have said this earlier but worth repeating. DuckDB is freaking amazing! Today I worked on a 56G TSV file containing 55 million rows of JSON serialized documents (all of OpenLibrary editions).
I can query this file including filtering on nested JSON structures and most queries complete in a few dozen seconds worst case, but I can also create derived indexes to bring down query times to milliseconds.
All in memory on an M1 Mac with 64GB RAM.
current books flow:
book ➡️ track on #LibraryThing
future maybe:
book ➡️ update data on #OpenLibrary ➡️ import book OL data into #BookWyrm ➡️ track on BookWyrm
why:
- simpler tracking site with less features seems less stressful. read more, online less (BW)
- supports open source projects (BW, OL)
- public data helps everyone (OL)
why I haven't switched yet:
- love LibraryThing's features: full edition control, stats, recs, data, etc.
plan: try the new flow for a while, then decide...
Question for #Bookstodon ....
I'm looking to migrate away from Goodreads (luckily I didn't get too far into using it).
Hoping for something very open/non-corporate.
Thoughts on #Bookwyrm vs #Openlibrary ?
Bookwyrm seems to be missing a lot of books. And the work to add them seems a waste when I can go upstream to OpenLibrary. OL lacks the social features but Bookwyrm seems very uh... basic & kinda ugly. 🤔
hmm when there is a book in #Openlibrary (to add it to #bookwyrm) but I only find the english edition but not the german (which also has a different ISBN -- should I add it as a separate book?
This time even the german an english title are the same.
Me ayudáis a dejar Goodreads?
