Question for #Bookstodon ....

I'm looking to migrate away from Goodreads (luckily I didn't get too far into using it).

Hoping for something very open/non-corporate.

Thoughts on #Bookwyrm vs #Openlibrary ?

Bookwyrm seems to be missing a lot of books. And the work to add them seems a waste when I can go upstream to OpenLibrary. OL lacks the social features but Bookwyrm seems very uh... basic & kinda ugly. πŸ€”

@syntaxseed Have you tried StoryGraph?

Unless you really feel like federating your reading updates is critically necessary

The StoryGraph

A site for you to track your reading and choose your next book

@jenniferplusplus @farah I'm seeing a lot of recs for StoryGraph. My concern is that without a commitment to openness, indie software easily becomes corporate software & we just have another Goodreads.

But I don't know much about them, I'll have a look!

@jenniferplusplus @farah Ok ok ok... I created an account and imported some books and played around a bit, and StoryGraph is VERY nice. :)

@syntaxseed I see story graph mentioned. Id also mention Library thing

librarything.com/

@syntaxseed I liked bookwyrm but you don't get much benefit from being on a smaller server and I didn't like having to constantly import my own metadata.

I landed on hardcover. It seems like a good mix of respecting my privacy and has great features.

@syntaxseed I think there are #fediverse folks working on making #bookwyrm better. I just wish I could convince my #library colleagues that this is a project worth doing. I don’t know where in the world you are but walk into your public library and tell them you want to use #bookwyrm and you want it to be better. @dawn @django
@KarenKeiller @syntaxseed @django addressing that issue of adding books and having that feel easier seems key to bookwyrm, I had a similar experience while playing around. @ramblingreaders seems like they have an active bookwyrm and I've appreciated reading updates and their insights on their open collective page
@syntaxseed i gave Bookwyrm a try but ended up on StoryGraph which is done by a small indie team and has many of the things Goodreads has.
