I hate offices...

Seriously, unless one's having to deal with inbound physical deliveries and visitors/customers there's hardly any reason for an office.

  • Obviously there are many professions where this is expected and otherwise impractical, and I acknowledge not everyone has FTTB or FTTH and proper broadband and/or has to deal with noise, distractions, small children, ... that make #WorkFromHome impossible for them...

And OFC contractors who have to get someplace to setup stuff can't really do that remotely, and that's fine too.

Remember when meetings were held in rooms? Now, every desk is a conference pod. Every conversation is public. Every project update echoes across the office like a Gregorian chant of corporate chaos.

If you've ever found yourself trapped in a meeting while overhearing three others… this one's for you.

Why Is Everyone in My Meeting?

Once upon a time, meetings were things you went to. They happened in rooms with doors, had chairs—of questionable lumbar support—and came with a vague promise of biscuits. Video calls were sacred rituals—booked with reverence, conducted in purpose-built spaces with technology that failed only half the time. Then came open-plan offices. Then came COVID. Then […]

Oh, look,, $workplace has installed some more new 'acoustically treated' individual booths, for when the cacophony in the normal battery hen floors - er, 'open plan workspaces' - gets too much.

Only allowed to use them for an hour at a time, though...

I mean, great that they're putting in some places of refuge for those who need them, but infuriating that they're needed in the first place because the office design is so hostile to anyone who's not an extrovert.

I often listen to classical music when trying to focus in the open plan office. @BBCRadio3 has a wonderful Verdi Requiem currently, which is definitely also making me question whether I should be in the office this much, so I guess it's doing its job🤷‍♀️ #Classical #FocusMode #OpenPlanOffice

How I wish #WhatsApp culture took over #Meta rather than the other way around - it's not fun having to grab a meeting room to do work because people are chatting loudly one row behind. #OpenPlanOffice is a terrible mistake and I'm so glad I normally #RemoteWork

There's a lot of noise around #rto #ReturnToOffice right now, at least in my own personal filter bubble. FWIW, I tend to think that #remotework is perfectly fine for most purposes; it saves me personally a lot of time.

That said, there's at least one question which seems important and has been largely neglected:
To what extent do the benefits of remote work amount to a compensation for the weaknesses of the seemingly ubiquitous #OpenPlanOffice ?

Open space environments drain employees’ morale due to noise pollution, according to research:

How the acoustics of your office impact your team's productivity — Amos Beech

The competition to recruit, train and retain talent has become fierce in the last few years. Businesses are constantly looking and trying new ways that will ensure that their employees have a healthy and positive work environment. At the same time, they are also working to save on office space and
