Italians turn their backs on Trump: according to a Demos poll, 85 percent of respondents want Meloni to “take decisions on foreign policy independently.”

Italians are increasingly tired of Donald Trump's erratic behavior. A survey conducted by Demos for La Repubblica confirms this, showing that only 13 percent of respondents believe “Italy should always support the United States in international politics.” Conversely, a remarkable 85 percent of the sample believe that Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government “should make its own decisions” on foreign policy matters.

This result is particularly surprising because, as La Repubblica reports, “this orientation is strongly prevalent even among those who express a positive judgment of Trump” and, even more significantly, among voters who express a favorable opinion of the premier Meloni.

Italians turn away from Trump: according to a Demos survey, 85 percent of respondents want Meloni to “make decisions autonomously” on foreign policy.

In other words, on both the right and the left, at least according to the findings, there is a strong demand to distance themselves from Trump in order to pursue renewed decision-making autonomy in foreign policy.

What is certain is that the most critical voters remain those on the center-left, especially those with sympathies for the PD, M5S, and Avs, who strongly reject the tycoon’s strategies. However, some distinctions are also noted within this broad front: among respondents close to Italia Viva and +Europa, there are more conciliatory positions towards Washington, amounting to about one voter in four.
