Southland Hospital is losing both of its urologists. This means patients from Southland will need to travel to Dunedin, where there's already a shortage of urologists.

Health NZ is making the usual soothing noises... 'our focus is on patients' while doing nothing practical to sort the problem.

Who remembers Luxon claiming that National's massive cuts to the health service wouldn't affect front line operations? Because urology is as front line as it gets.

this is exactly why it's the EASY operations that are being outsourced to the private sector—to induce public doctors and nurses to go private and to hollow out the public system until it's all husk and no corn

Prime Minister’s science prizes recognise outstanding achievements in agriculture, anxiety, virology, science teaching and phytoremediation

A team generating significant economic and environmental benefits from improving a plant partner of rye grass, a scientist developing a multidisciplinary approach to understanding and managing anxiety and a virologist communicating about pandemic threats have been recognised in the latest Prime Minister’s Science Prizes.  A science teacher seeking equitable outcomes for his students and a student using fungi to enhance the filtering of water pollutants by plants were also recognised.

"I am not wearing rose-tinted glasses. I had a very good experience; many don’t. But if we only talk about crises and things that go wrong, we miss the thousands of things that go right. If we don’t talk about them, we are in danger of taking them for granted, and what we take for granted can more easily be taken away. An anonymous mass of crisis is easier to chip away at than thousands of single, caring interactions with singularly dedicated people."

And the big spend on external hires is set to continue next year, despite the ministry planning to cut up to 1500 staff.

Wow, there's a surprise. More stuff for hospitals, but no extra money. Cut 1.4b off the budget, and fit in these other things.

Yet, somehow there's still budget to outsource to private clinics?

"Despite this, Reti said there was capacity to lift the volume of procedures outsourced to private hospitals within the current budget."

Those people who have a stake in private hospitals must be happy about that.

So, NZ is happy to protest when the governments of other countries take away the civil rights liberties of their civilians but not when it happens in New Zealand itself.
Cool, cool, cool.
