I'm soon starting up a Nighttime Lights Remote Sensing webinar. Speakers will come from all over the world, and the talks will take place alternately in the (European) morning or late afternoon/evening, to allow international participation.

The first talk in the series is next Monday. If you're interested in attending, sign up here: https://www.listserv.dfn.de/sympa/subscribe/nlrs_webinar

In 2021, hundreds of citizen scientists walked a distance of 600 km, counting up and classifying all of the outdoor lights they could see while they did it. The results of their observations have just been published in the journal Nature Cities: https://www.nature.com/articles/s44284-025-00239-5

Find out why they did it, and what they found out in this thread πŸ‘‡

Public service announcement:

Data from #VIIRS DNB since the summer is affected by an instrumental effect, which makes the data from the last few months darker than they should be (see e.g. this graph for Manhattan). The #NASA #BlackMarble team is working to fix it.

ht to Damien Guiraudie who wrote to me to ask what was going on, and also to Zhuosen Wang from @NASA who quickly responded to my question.

When I saw this, I was like "uh oh, it looks like someone screwed up the ground control points..."

But no, it turns out that's what the street actually looks like 🀣

This weekend at the #ESAOpenDay, @pmisson, Stefanie Riel, and I presented the scientific work that is done with #Astronaut photographs from the #ISS and #NighttimeLights research in general.

We were very happy to have had two #ESA astronauts stop by for an hour, to help us tell the public about their work: Thomas Reiter and John McFall (pictured)!

Thanks for a great event ESA, and thanks to everyone who stopped by our stand!

Worldview: Explore Your Dynamic Planet

The NASA Worldview app provides a satellite's perspective of the planet as it looks today and as it has in the past through daily satellite images. Worldview is part of NASA’s Earth Science Data and Information System. ESDIS makes the agency's large repository of data accessible and freely available to the public.
