We've submitted our requests to stage three commedia dell'arte performances at Pennsic 53 this summer! We're currently planning to encore "What Went Down in Goblin Town?" (premiered at Cleveland ConCoction earlier this month) and "Arlecchino, Emperor on the Moon" (premiering at Ohio State University next month) plus a to-be-decided additional play. We hope to provide some private camp entertainment again as well!

The theme this year for the Barony of the Cleftlands {Not So} Regular {Not January} Event has the theme of "The Lord of Misrule Reigns" so of course we - the local troupe of fools - had to sign up for a performance time to stage a short commedia dell'arte play! Just days after April Fools on Saturday, April 4 in Medina, OH!

One of the benefits of commedia dell'arte is that we can easily encore the same scenario and perform the same characters again and again, improving our improv which each attempt. No matter what happens during a performance there is no failure if the audience laughs and we learn something to make better next time!

Yesterday was the end of Carnevale from the home of our artform, Italy! But it was also lunarsolar new year to start the Year of the Horse! To mark the intertwined occasion, here's a clip from a short commedia dell'arte we staged virtually in 2021 featuring foolish confusion over a horse dressage! We should probably use this costume more (and we did recently review a few Japanese comedic theatre kyōgen that included either a person disguising as a horse or an actual horse character still played by a human actor). So perhaps... this is the year?!

Carnival has intersection with commedia dell'arte and also with the foundation of our troupe. Our founder's first commedia performance was for Carnevale at Case Western Reserve University in 2005. One year later, the Carnevale performance inspired us to form the troupe two months later. And 19 years ago TODAY at Carnevale was our very first performance under the banner of The Confused Greenies / i Verdi Confusi! To reflect this heritage, our troupe's primary colors of green and purple are adopted from Mardi Gras!

Four years ago we staged "The Horrible and Terrifying Deeds and Words of Niphleseth, Queen of the Wild Island of Chitterlingonian Sausages" inspired by the 16th Century satirical novels by François Rabelais. In our play, Dottore Gratiano, Capitano Testosteroné, and Arlecchino hope the spirit of Carnevale season will save them when faced against a supposed army of sausage warriors!
