Choices, choices... What commedia dell'arte shall we bring to Pennsic 53 this July and August?

One the plays written during our second #Inktober challenge, "The Illuminated Harlequin" is inspired by some fascinating historic trivia of camera obscura techniques (and said research makes it great for the SCA) but we have yet to tackle how handle the special effects (especially in the medieval campground setting of Pennsic!).

May 21 is I Need a Patch For That Day!

The most famous and iconic character of commedia dell'arte is Arlecchino known for his clownish harlequin costume full of colorful patches. Patchwork is so important to our troupe we even adopted it as one of our names!

But beyond its beautiful and chaotic aesthetic, patchwork is a good metaphor for how our projects come together with many players and many ideas and a hodgepodge of resources to jumble around until we create something fabulous and new!

While that ribald musical project was a bit too much to tackle in 2026 it's mostly ready and waiting for the right opportunity... So let's do some lazzi again!

May 18 is Victoria Day in Canada... which is probably safer than a Vittoria Day which would be named after the famous commedia dell'arte prima donna Vittoria Piisimi from the 16th Century who inspired our infamous black widow character!

Earlier this year we distracted ourselves from the play we were supposed to be writing to instead craft an adaptation of a historic farce form the earliest days of commedia dell'arte. Given two of our likely plays are to be experimental, perhaps our third should be the more traditional "The Unexpected Twin" where the actor for the disguised Isabella also plays her long-lost twin brother in numerous quick costume changes!
