I'm very tired of being Learning Material for men on their self-improvement journeys, but I also have no idea how to ✨stop doing it✨

What is the earliest example of the manic pixie dream girl trope? Wikipedia says the term was coined in 2007 but mentions Katharine Hepburn's character in Bringing Up Baby (1938) as one of the earliest examples: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manic_Pixie_Dream_Girl

Can we not find something earlier, or is there something about modernity necessary for the #MPDG to exist?

I was going to ask if Maria from The Sound of Music counts, but the Atlantic already answered (yes, basically): https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2015/03/maria-von-trapp-the-original-manic-pixie-dream-girl/386606/

Manic Pixie Dream Girl - Wikipedia

@aoikurayami Like the article says, yes, it *can* definitely be degrading to a point, but it can also be used in a way that the #MPDG develops her own character and wants throughout the film or tv series. Apparently there have been attempts to make a Manic-Pixie-Dream-Guy but it doesn't work as well, with some notable exceptions....

(Another!) twist on the Introduction: Introduce yourself using five movies to get to know you better

Saw this idea tooted by @maddramaqueen ☺️

“I always tell the girls, never take it seriously. If you never take it seriously, you never get hurt, if you never get hurt, you always have fun, and if you ever get lonely, just go to the record store and visit your friends”

Manic Pixie Dream Girls, like Penny Lane and Summer Finn are ✨ autistic ✨
