Give LibreOffice a try. Writer and Calc are great alternatives to MS Office, and can easily open and edit old and Modern MS Word files.
I have never used MS on my Linux boxes, and never had any issues. @libreoffice makes a great product. Congtats on making the switch! It's a process, and you can learn it. There are plenty of good people to help, and d excellent documentation, out there. #LinuxMint is a great distro.

I've been hunting for something to replace my venerable Word 2003 for years and have recently stumbled over #AtlantisWordProcessor

It is near-perfect in looks, speed and customisation. There are the usual problems with getting a perfect 1:1 layout from MS Word or LibreOffice, but there's only one feature that really keeps me from switching over: It doesn't seem to be able to read or make character styles (as opposed to paragraph style templates, which work very well).

For all of you who don't need that one feature (or scripting or VBA) and never quite got comfy with Libre Office, this shareware is a good, lightweight alternative to other word processors and that at $49 for a life-time license.
