I’m looking to move away from Microsoft apps and I’m wondering what note-taking apps you all prefer. I’m looking for something secure and private. (Not a paper notebook though.) Thanks.

Some questions first:
* Handwritten or keyboard typing
* On one device or synchronized to at least two or more devices
* Simple notes or markdown style

I for myself work with obsidian (https://obsidian.md) and Joplin (https://joplinapp.org). You can also use a "storage share" (nextcloud) from hetzner and use nextcloud's note app. In the end this all depends on what you want to achieve with the notes.

Maybe this helps for a start.

Obsidian

@LoganFive

Do you need them to automatically sync across devices? If so, then do all the devices connect to the same LAN frequently? What operating systems do they run? Do you need to be able to collaborate with others? If so, then does it need to be in real time?

And what kind of features do you need in the notes themselves (e.g., bold text, tables, kanban board)?

I use Zettlr on PC and Markor on Android. I also sync my notes with SyncThing.

@LoganFive
There is a lot of alternatives out there. The more conservative choice would be #joplin
If you need linking but like filemanagement #obsidian is the gold standard. It has a lot of plugins that make it very versatile.
If you love linking and don't need files #logseq might be a good choice.
And if notion ever spoke to you #Anytype might be what you're looking for.

I'm all in on #Joplin. I self-host its server (not necessary, but I prefer the privacy). I have multiple client instances on Windows (work), iOS (work), Linux (personal) & Android (personal). It supports MD & other good features like #Mermaid diagrams too. Everything syncs well.

There are some rough edges in the interface which could do with some QOL improvements, but the overall experience is good.

Happy to answer any specific questions.

@LoganFive

I like Simplenote because it syncs phone and laptop. Probably not secure, so I might not be answering the right question.

@LoganFive I recently went through a lot of different note apps because I wanted to get off of notion. #Logseq is great if you like Roam Research. I also looked into #Joplin and #Anytype. But I don't like having all the notes in one database. #Obsidian keeps notes as individual markdown files in a folder. That fits what I want. It's also very extensible with plugins.
@LoganFive I chose Obsidian. I do use their sync service. It's end to end encrypted and they do audits, so I felt good about that. One security gap in my opinion is the device itself, you can't lock the files since they just exist in your file structure. You can lock your device, so there's that.
@LoganFive i recommend Obsidian. I'm syncing it with their official sync on Android, macOS, iPad, and #zorinos without problems. I have some plugin recs on my blog; see my bio for link.
