On my drive to work today this question popped up in my head:
Why are we doing this?
I mean, the
#Fediverse as a whole is great and all, my thoughts are more concerned with the format of
#microblogging in particular:
Why use specialized services for a thing that could be perfectly replaced by mailing lists? I mean,
#email is around for forever now, nearly everyone has an email address, it can be perfectly decentralized and you can migrate from one server to another without any problems and keep all your data, contacts and stuff. Hell... even having this "Email-Microblogging" completely encrypted would be relatively easy, simply through
#GnuPGI mean, i imagine it this way: You want to start microblogging yourself? No problem! Set up an
#mailing_list (it's easy!) and you are ready to go. People can subscribe... eeehm... i a mean "follow you". Incoming mail can be filtered to your hearts wishes and you can even read it offline, write mails.... eeehm... "posts" offline and push and pull everything the moment your connection is back.
I don't want to be misunderstood: I don't want to diminish the Fediverse, i just wondered: Why did this stuff evolve that way?
