Mag-Loop Antenna Tuning Indicator Project - Collected a few plastic caps, dug out the #30 wire-wrap wire, and tested LEDs for brightness using DVM diode-check function. Found some really bright RED LEDs to try in next version (super bright using IC-705 20% TX power level). Plan to make a few versions using different number of loop turns. Maybe red cap for higher power (less turns) and white for lower power (more turns)? Still thinking about how to best attach to loop. #HamRadio #DIY #MagLoop
Turns out that adding ferrite to a loop antenna “dampens the loop RF flow”, i.e., degrades the antenna efficiency. Doh! But, taking out the ferrite and just coupling a small three turn loop to the mag-loop’s main loop does not degrade the antenna much (if at all). This version built with a few turns around a water bottle cap and close coupled to the loop works pretty well down on 40m. Will continue testing and optimizing, then write up as blog post thereafter.

Finally some sun and free time. CT7ARW is currently calling on 18118 SSB for our new award DAP, from reference AP-205, that is also on CTFF-0454. Also playing with a #magloop from OM0ET, surprisingly good for it's size! #wwff #ctff

Last night’s ferrite #MagLoop antenna test was a success, but barely. Got #WSPR decodes of only 1 station, <700km.

MUCH more detail in the ALT text.

#GutenMorGÄHN heute geht es mit #Handball weiter, Junior spielt erst A-Jugend, dann B-Jugend. Ich werde nachher bei #H13 weiter die #MagLoop bauen.
@quantensalat Works fine with 10W on CW (40m and up). Here on FT-8 can work stations as long as RX level is -10 or higher. Upper bands work better than lower ones. Do not use SSB here — but CW is pretty much work anyone you can hear (reasonably above the noise) with the IC-705 cranking at 13.8V & 10 Watts. Am sure the other end of the link is dong the heavy lifting!

Question for the hams on here since I'm finding somewhat contradictory information on the Internet: Do magnetic loop antennas work (well enough) indoors on 10m? Can't permanently install an antenna or even span one across the backyard (plus, to make things worse, transmitting from the ground floor).

Wellbrook versus LZ1AQ Loop Comparison - Making It Up

My article this week will compare the Wellbrook versus LZ1AQ wideband receiving loops. Both perform really well for MW and SWL.

THIS IS NOT AN ENDORSEMENT! Living in a HOA, apartment or other restrictive covenant has its challenges for #AmateurRadio #HamRadio operations. Yesterday, I made these CW #MorseCode QSOs with this @AlphaAntenna #MagLoop with a #FT891 at 30 watts. Restrictions? Not FOR ME.
My Wellbrook Loop Antenna - Making It Up

My Wellbrook Loop is up and running about 25 feet from my house. Works great, pleasant surprise for a used unit.
