I got my new #Anbernic RG40XX H #emulation handheld on Tuesday. Installed #Knulli (a custom firmware) on it and then spent way too long figuring out how to import my #FinalFantasyIX save file. It should've been easy since I've done it so many times but unfortunately not.

Things I like about this device:
-Looks awesome (I'm a sucker for rainbow RGB on black)
-Great ergonomics (the d-pad and joysticks are both easily reachable)
-Very pocketable
-Quiet face buttons
-Good sized 4:3 aspect ratio display with minimal backlight bleed that seems to get bright enough to use it outside

Things I don't like about this device:
-It's just barely too underpowered to play FFIX at 2x resolution without slowdown during some battle animations
-Speakers aren't great
-Bumpers and triggers are very clicky and loud
-Colors aren't very vibrant and blacks aren't very black

Overall, I'm happy with this device and plan to keep it. Definitely worth $50.

Start to play Mizzurna Falls for #ps1
Mizzurna Falls is a #TwinPeaks like Videogame, translated in 2021 in english.

Pov: my handheld console is booting up

I just published a blog post about my experience with four different Anbernic handhelds powered by the same Allwinner H700 system-on-a-chip. Those handhelds are commonly referred to as being part of the RGXX series. #VideoGames #Emulation #Anbernic #Knulli

A Tale of Four Anbernic H700-b...
A Tale of Four Anbernic H700-based Handhelds

Over the past couple of years, I have been building up a decent collection of handheld consoles that target software emulation of video games (and two that are FPGA-based that are built to virtually replicate/emulate original hardware). Four of those handhelds share two important characteristics: they are built by Anbernic and use the Allwinner A700 ARM-based system on a chip.

ps: Of course, I had to hit publish right after Knulli announced a new version of their custom firmware 🙄

And in way more fun news, I finally caved and snagged one of those emulation hand held devices. This is one of many “XX” series of devices from Anbernic, the RG40XX-V and damn I’m so impressed with it. I pretty much instantly installed #Knulli on it. And it’s more or less great out of the box, but it gives you about a bajillion settings to tweak, per system.

I picked this up because I’m so afraid of damaging or losing one of my vintage hand held devices. If I destroy this one or loose it, I’ll be sad, but super easy to replace, for now anyway.

By the way, I’ve fallen headfirst into the retro gaming rabbit hole thanks to the AYANEO Pocket Micro. Bought an Anbernic RG35XX H a day later and spent yesterday's whole evening with @retrogamecorps's shader guide. What have I done?

Wow. Switching from #Knulli to #MuOS dropped the boot time on my RG35xx H from 51 seconds to 16 seconds.

That’s a huge improvement and really fixes one of my major frustrations with it.

I think the safest device for this purpose is the #Anbernic #RG35xx; it can play a ton of games, has wifi for achievements, and can be had for as little as $50. They are common and have a lot of support from OSes like #minUI #MuOS #ArkOS and #knulli. The people I want to gift them to wouldn't appreciate Gamecube/Dreamcast support much anyway.
