Yaba Sanshiro (Sega Saturn) Rewrites VDP1 Core to Improve Rendering - sh.itjust.works

Sega Saturn emulator Yaba Sanshiro pushed a major update today for Android, changing the way it renders graphics to improve accuracy and increase the number of games compatible on it. “The VDP1 core has been completely rewritten with compute shaders, greatly improving sprite rendering accuracy and compatibility for Sega Saturn games,” said the emulator’s developer, Shinya “DevMiyax” Miyamoto, on X.

“Sour” the original dev is also still actively involved. Mesen is a multi-system emulator for Windows, Linux, and macOS. It supports NES, SNES, Game Boy (GB/SGB/GBC), Game Boy Advance, PC Engine, SMS/Game Gear, and WonderSwan (WS/WSC). MesenCE is a community-managed fork based on Mesen2, created to maintain and expand this emulator into the future.

This handheld, solar-powered device that is currently in development has a display with almost the perfect resolution for classic Mac emulation (Sharp Memory Display with 536x336 pixels, the Mac has 512x342).

The device uses an STM32U5 Cortex-M33 SoC, but the exact version is not specified. The 32U5 is available with up to 4 MB Flash and 3 MB SRAM in an LQFP100 package, so a Mac Plus/SE emulation seems feasible.

EMiX: Because apparently one #FPGA just wasn't enough! 🤪 Dive into this riveting tale of #hardware architects who dream in #circuits and count sheep in parallel. Who knew #emulation could be so... tantalizing? 🙃

EMiX: Emulating Beyond Single-FPGA Limits

FPGA-level emulation is a key step in pre-silicon chip design validation. However, emulating large-scale multi-core systems increasingly exceed the hardware resource capacity of a single FPGA, limiting the feasibility of full-system emulation. To address this challenge, we introduce EMiX, a scalable multi-FPGA framework that enables distributed emulation of multi-core RISC-V architectures beyond single-FPGA resource limits. EMiX systematically partitions a monolithic multi-core design into multiple components and deploys them across multiple interconnected FPGAs, effectively exploiting inter-FPGA interconnects to balance scalability and performance without requiring fundamental RTL redesign. We prototype EMiX with a 64-core architecture across eight interconnected Alveo U55c FPGAs (scalable on core and FPGA counts), successfully demonstrating full-system execution including Linux boot. EMiX will be released as an open-source platform.

Oh, cool! Telev78 just shared a working 5.25 inch disk image of the original TETRIS by MirrorSoft. Back in 1987, EGA was the fanciest available graphics mode on the IBM-PC! Hell yeah! Interestingly, this European release was slightly different from the Spectrum Holobyte version. Comparing them side by side using 86Box.
