Here's a kind of courage I don't often see recognised.

Lindy Butcher fosters orphaned baby wombats, usually found in the pouch of a mother wombat that's been killed by a car. These "pouch babies" are essentially premature, and need highly skilled, labour intensive round the clock care.

Lindy is realistic about the fact that each tiny baby she takes on is incredibly fragile and might die, but still loves each one tenderly, gently, with respect and humour and awe at their individual beauty.

That's courage. To love despite the risk of grief.

The link goes to an Instagram video where she shows one of the newest babies, who has just opened his eyes. She's been wearing him next to her body. She says:

"I'm never not surprised and delighted when these tiny babies open their eyes."
