Toronto still has no bylaw on how hot rentals can get. Now council could be a step closer to new rules
A bylaw laying out a maximum temperature for the city’s rental units could be around the corner, with Toronto city council set to consider a framework for the new rules in late June. But for longtime advocates of the bylaw, the multi-year delays have already stretched on for far too long.

Strengthening the UN Human Rights Council: Pathways to Enhanced Credibility and Effectiveness - Policy Brief | ENSURED

The UN Human Rights Council is at a critical juncture. This policy brief pinpoints four mutually reinforcing challenges that hinder the workings of the HRC: (1) the non-enforceability of human rights norms, (2) problematic membership practices, (3) restricted civil society access, and (4) severe resource constraints. To address these issues, policymakers should set up enhanced monitoring and early warning systems, guarantee competitive elections and accountability measures, establish and enforce anti-reprisal policies, and secure states’ financial commitments.

Mieli’s final appeal to Schlein: “Withdraw from the race.” Broad field in chaos.

Paolo Mieli is suggesting strategies and positions to the center-left after the local elections. He argues that the center-left was too optimistic after the referendum and that there is no real unified project, but also that at this point if the opposition wants to win the next general elections, Elly Schlein must step back from the coalition challenge for the prime minister candidate, to the advantage of Giuseppe Conte or other new names (Silvia Salis?).

The Corriere della sera editor intervenes on Otto e mezzo, Lilli Gruber’s program on La7 on Thursday, May 28th, starting by listing the merits of the Pd secretary: “She took a party at a corpse-like moment and brought it back to the forefront of the world, and this should be recognized. Then she kept together a coalition that had problems. However, at this point there was a post-referendum that showed that a canvas that seemed woven once and for all, was not.” The right-wing coalition is still strong and has been favored by “a lot of mistakes in the candidacies,” Mieli continues.

And now? Schlein “must start weaving the canvas again. And to do this seriously, she must withdraw from the race for the presidency of the Council,” the journalist says. Elly should reserve “a role that in politics great leaders have often reserved, that is to give a hand.”

In short, shouldn't she be the one challenging Giorgia Meloni? “She will choose what she wants, but in my opinion, it would do her good to step back. Because if not, we will live the next months” with the confrontation between Schlein and Conte, with the primaries becoming a “struggle” and a count. “If she is a great leader as I think she is, she should step back and say I will not be the candidate of the center-left in the next political elections,” Mieli concludes.
