Genre blending hip-hop artist Kenny Mason incorporates the sound and feel of alt-rock (and emo) into his otherwise trap based sound in a fairly loose, back-and-forth fashion. He brings these ingredients into his songs in remarkably smooth ways where transitions and switches between styles feel natural, seamlessly unifying into a single flow regularly. There is no doubt though, that the main engine that drives his music is hip-hop, rather than the other way around. His melodic choices are drawn from the R&B tradition for the most part. He has a good deal of deadpan to his rapping, and effectively glides in and out of a crooning mode when he is singing.

This was a hectic year for me, so obviously this is being published way later than it should have been. I was busy catching up on releases until late last night, so I didn’t feel like I had heard enough to put together this playlist. Anyway, shoutout to Kembe X & Hippie Sabotage for releasing my favorite album of the month with Sleep Paralysis. Kembe X is gearing up to release a follow-up EP on October 25th, so that’s really exciting. Sleep Paralysis is definitely one of my most played albums of the year. Particularly the songs Kill Everything in the Way & Baby I’m Up. I also go back to the Isaiah Rashad feature on Rolling Stoned a lot. The new project is called “it’s not that deep,” and there are already a few singles out, all of which are fire. I suggest starting with the Ab-Soul collaboration, Introverted, Extrovert. It’s boiling hot fire. Anyway, below are the Apple Music and Spotify versions of my March 2024 playlist. Throw it on shuffle and let me know what your favorite tracks are. Peace!
