Kim Gordon built her career as the legendary singer, bass player, songwriter of the legendary and enormously influential band Sonic Youth from the late '80s through the '00s. Originally a southern Californian with a background in visual arts, she is now back in Los Angeles, doing her art and her solo work, producing a kind of hard-edged garage-driven experimental music that is not too far removed from Sonic Youth years. She combines electronic loops, repetitive conceptual work with her signature bass-driven dirty dirges or pounding drum beats bashing against a wall of distorted guitars. You know .... all Sonic Youth stuff, except, a tad more out there. Her solo work is the best way to find out about the evolution of an enormously influential musician whose impact can be seen in a lot of today's musical acts of a younger generation (Knife Wife, Horsegirl).

Composer and pianist Ethan Iverson has proven to be quite an omnivore of jazz throughout his career. His appetite stretches further outside of jazz, prompting him to regularly create distinct hybrids with classical music, pop, and rock. As a founding member of The Bad Plus, he spent a good amount of time exploring avant-garde jazz as well as producing bold adaptations of popular songs by the likes of Nirvana or The Pixies, until his departure in 2017. His solo career often finds him trying different styles and sounds, engaging in collaborations that take him from chamber style duets to bebop tributes and moving fluidly between hard bop, post bop, and classical music crossovers. A constant that remains in his music across all these stylistic shifts has been the centrality of melody to his music, along with his deliberate approach and expressive use of the piano.

Polyphia is a band that takes guitar wizardry as its core identity, creating modern day prog rock with strong metal and fusion overtones and a fairly explicit pop sound. In a way, they package the appeal of complex licks molded by their high level musicianship and instrumental virtuoso (where guitarist Tim Henson serves as a focal point) and more than a spoonful of sweet hooks that help make their work fairly accessible for a broader audience base. Their music is primarily instrumental, though they have been bringing some guest vocalists on their albums as of late, coupled with their turn towards a funkier direction, bolstered by their jazzy moves, synth action and an occasional brass section along the way.

Robber Robbber is a band out of Burlington, Vermont that is led by drummer Zack James and guitarist Nina Cates, whose vocals give off reassuring vibes that all will be well even when their rough, unpolished, and somewhat unsettling sound might suggests otherwise. Their stylistic roots are in the jumpy, dark tones of post-punk and shoegaze, as well as the garage rock revival of the '00s. They work in a consistently jagged esthetic with an adventurous approach that is comparable to Wombo and Palm, who similarly downplay melodies in favor of a bold flow. In a way, Robber Robber expands on and solidifies what Cates and James started doing earlier in Guy Ferrari, a duo that effectively was the band's progenitor.
