War against Iran, Trump suspends Jones Act to curb oil prices

Operation “Epic Fury” is shaking up what was once a cornerstone of American maritime policy for over a century. The Trump Administration has announced that it will temporarily relax restrictions on the Jones Act, a law that limits the transportation of oil within the United States, in an attempt to stem rising fuel prices due to the war in Iran.

Donald Trump has suspended the Jones Act requirements for 60 days “to mitigate short-term market disruptions while the U.S. military continues to pursue the objectives of Operation Epic Fury,” said White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt on X. The waiver, she added, will allow “vital resources such as oil, natural gas, fertilizers, and coal to flow freely to U.S. ports.” The Jones Act stipulates that only ships built in the United States and with American crews can load cargo at American ports and transport it to another U.S. port. These requirements result in higher costs for customers compared to foreign ships.

The United States is struggling with the surge in gasoline prices since the beginning of “Epic fury.” A significant issue for Trump ahead of the midterm elections, so much so that the Department of Energy, at his direction, announced on March 12 the release of 172 million barrels of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve starting this week.

The requirement sharply limits the number of tankers available for domestic shipments, but is supported by maritime industry #unions.

Waiving the rule temporarily would allow foreign ships to carry cargoes between #US ports, potentially lowering #shipping costs & speeding deliveries. Analysts have said, however, that the impact on pump prices will likely be minimal.

Kevin Breuninger reports, questions arise as the 60-day Jones Act waiver by President Trump aims to stabilize oil markets amidst the Iran conflict, intended to ease the flow of vital resources to U.S. ports. The US Maritime industry is already small compared to other countries with similar GDPs. The US has 80 flagged ships. China has over 2000, leaving us with a very soft spot in the face of international conflict. Repealing the Jones Act would further decimate it. Attached is a letter from the Maritime Unions to the current administration refuting his claims about the benefits of a repeal.
In my own side note, he is playing us right into the hands of Russia.

"White House considers waiving maritime commerce restrictions as fuel prices skyrocket

The move comes as the U.S. and Israel’s war in Iran has sent oil prices soaring, with a key choke point effectively blocked.

The White House is considering waiving a century-old law that promotes the use of American vessels in maritime commerce, as the Trump administration faces rising fuel prices amid the ongoing war in Iran.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement that the administration may waive the Jones Act, a 1920 statute that requires cargo being moved by water between U.S. ports to be shipped on vessels that are built, owned and registered in the U.S.

'In the interest of national defense, the White House is considering waiving the Jones Act for a limited period of time to ensure vital energy products and agricultural necessities are flowing freely to U.S. ports,' Leavitt said. 'This action has not been finalized.'

The development, which was first reported by Bloomberg News, comes as the White House faces growing political pressure over rising gas and oil prices, with Iran moving to choke off traffic in the critical Strait of Hormuz amid the U.S. and Israel’s ongoing war with the country."
