Very helpful! This issue occurs when trying to upload a photo to a record using the #irecord app. Intermittent, sometimes only affects 1 image file out of several. When I try the following day it seems to be fine. Using a Pixel 9 Pro XL & the Google Photos android app

Insect ID'd

I came across this giant hoverfly yesterday on a walk. I've never seen one before and it's maybe an inch (2.5cm) big.

I have tried to find out which it is but to no avail. We're NW Scotland if that helps

Edit: I can share higher quality images if required, they're heavily compressed to save bandwidth 😅

Edit 2 - ID'd as a Tabanus sudeticus a terrifying biting horsefly

These are very pretty myrid bugs. (Deraeocorus ruber). There are two different colour variants but it isn't the usual case of male and female having different colouration.

I have spotted both, a few metres from each other, a few days apart.

Previous local records date to pre-2000 and even then, only 4 have been seen. Obviously it hasn't disappeared!

Most records are close to cities, so we are back to mapping enthusiasts, not insects.

What it brings home is that (aside from 'big ticket' items like butterflies) almost nobody is doing this work.

Protection requires data. Reserves, management policies, development - all rely on factual assessments of biodiversity.

More people need to use iRecord and iNaturalist. Building a deep picture of a tiny area is more useful than random jottings from random places.

Show what is there. Then defend it.

It's the little things that get me. Thyme-leaved Sandwort, in Caryophyllaceae, #PinkFamily London -- I had never consciously seen it before. Of course, being small it would often be overlooked, and also under-recorded -- but I look for small plants. Are many other people here familiar with it, or do you see it regularly? Firebugs (Pyrrhocoris apterus) at the northern edge of their range in the UK. Described as 'nationally scarce' in my fairly recent insect book. They are clearly taking advantage of global heating. These were in Gillingham, Kent, yesterday, on a sunny bank. I will #irecord them as they are easily recognized and are one of several species that can help to track insect range in relation to climate. #insects #ClimateDiary

another day, another butterfly! i haven't been lucky enough to see a common blue in my garden until now (although i thought i saw a flash of blue in the garden last week but it was gone before i could get a closer look, could have been this little lady!) 🦋
