Dark-winged Wrinklehead (Chrysogaster solstitialis) is a common hoverfly in the UK. The adults feed mostly on umbellifers. In common with other Chrysogaster species, the larvae are aquatic and live in mud and decaying vegetation beside streams and ponds. The eyes meeting at the top of the head indicate that this one is a male.

Another hoverfly of the genus Syrphus. I think hoverflies are my favourite insect group. The eyes don't meet at the top of the head, indicating that this one is a female. Identification to species level in this genus is usually not possible from a photograph, but is most likely one of S. ribesii, S. vitripennis or S. torvus.
