@levampyre

Frontiers | The Intense World Theory – A Unifying Theory of the Neurobiology of Autism

Autism covers a wide spectrum of disorders for which there are many views, hypotheses and theories. Here we propose a unifying theory of autism, the Intense ...

Frontiers

A while ago I was listening to the Autistic Culture Podcast and Matt (who's since left) brought up the intense world theory of #Autism, which explains a lot about our brains.

According to studies (in link below), generally, the #Autistic brain generates 42% more information at rest, over-activates upon eye contact and reading faces, and has closer synaptic firing. No wonder we get easily overwhelmed by the world! 😵‍💫

Intense world theory

The intense world theory describes how autistic brains may be "hyper-functional" and highly reactive, leading to overwhelm and attempts to detach from an extreme world.[1] It was developed by neuroscientists Kamila and Henry Markram alongside Tania Rinaldi.[2][3] Rather than framing autism solely as a list of deficits, this theory describes how extreme sensitivities can lead to impressive strengths and deep struggles.[2][4] The Markrams proposed four axes:[1] Hyper-perception (e.g. sensory...

...#PeterVerheulen** phrases it.

Maybe, #LLM research will lead to breakthroughs in #ASD/#autism research as well?

In any event, the conclusions that are drawn are a far cry from the ones the authors of the #IntenseWorldTheory originally drew back in 2010.

@VulcanTourist

I had been looking for more recent research on the #IntenseWorldTheory, so thank you.

As your linked article states, autism research is progressing quickly. 2014 is not all that recent either.

Is anyone aware of scientifically solid new research from the last 5 years?

Regarding "conflict" as an element of the human social world, and the prevailing modern taste for it, even the praising of it:

All I have to do is read the daily news to see how many people there are in the world, most of whom are #neurotypical persons, who seem to like conflict.

Just read the headlines of any news journal.

Just look at what we're doing to the planet.

Just look at what humans do to other humans.

So, conflict is typical.

I'm #neurodivergent

Not typical.

Give me a quiet, peaceful #green forest, next to a flowing stream, alone or with a friend, just walking, not struggling, just strolling. #peace

Others may differ.

Oh, that doesn't mean I won't fight back when people come at me. It doesn't mean I won't defend myself.

That doesn't mean you want to deal with me once you provoke me past a certain point.

But that's not what I want for my life. I want to get my pulse rate to a calm state. I want to have a healthy life. I want to calm the agitation. I want to get my amygdala to relax.

Because I have a very reactive @actuallyautistic amygdala... and I see everything, feel everything. #intenseworldtheory #IntenseWorld

Thanks for reading.

I totally get your initial disappointed reaction; but when you think about it, having some kind of account of the mechanisms behind your uniqueness (eg the #IntenseWorldTheory of autism) doesn't actually make you any less unique or complex. It just gives you more insights into yourself and possible tools for tweaking / channelling your behaviour.

I've had a life long interest in cognitive science, and the more I learn about how brains work the more magnificent I find them. ❤️

It felt so good to move like an ethereal being, one's own body as the living artistic instrument, one's own arms and legs and torso a paint brush, painting images of color, rhythm, and making visual music in three dimensional movement through time and space, kinetic poetry in motion, living in ecstasy through movement, every moment a feeling of sheer bliss, but also feeling like one is forever striving for perfection but never reaching it, or reaching it for a moment, then losing it, then finding it, wanting to make it last longer and longer, finally getting there, a day when one gets through an entire piece of complicated choreography with no error.

It profoundly breaks my heart to think about all the things I have walked away from.

No one knew my inner world. No one knew my passion, my need for art, the quiet, but extreme intensity of the ecstasy I felt, and which I thrived on.

No one had a clue. And it died.

I studied modern dance and #ballet when I was in my teens and 20s. I was drawn to it as an abstract art form. I was quite good... alas, I moved on from it lacking support. I was #autistic... no one knew I needed encouragement, no one knew that even though I was told a thousand fucking times by accomplished dancers and teachers that I was really, really good, I didn't believe it, but said nothing. I walked away from it.

I internalized everything. Held it all silently inside. But I was focused like a laser, unrelenting, practicing, practicing, practicing, beyond everyone else in our Hollywood studio in the Los Angeles area.

I would wake up at night doing plié exercises and leg extensions. I literally did ballet in my sleep.

For me it was a world of autistic "stim" every day, all week long, all month long. Heaven. It was ritual, routine, special interest, and hyper-focus all wrapped into one activity.

I tragically and so regretfully have no photos. When my teacher offered his students photos from one of our performances, which showed me flying through the air, my #hypermobile feet perfectly pointed, legs extended, all in perfect form, I rather cryptically, stoically and autistically declined. Who needs photos? There will be more photos on another day.
