Since its arrival this summer, scientists have been racing to understand as much as possible about 3I/ATLAS, the third recorded visitor from outside our solar system. A breakthrough study published on Sept. 30 has scientists exclaiming, “OH!”: the first detection of hydroxyl gas [OH] from an interstellar object.

Hydroxyl radical (·OH) is the most reactive oxidant and plays important roles in the biogeochemical cycle of elements and the attenuation of contaminants in the environment. In recent years, the redox reaction of iron in subsurface sediments was found to produce ·OH naturally, even in dark conditions without the presence of exogenous hydrogen peroxide. However, the effect of mineral-associated soil organic matter (SOM) on the process is not well understood.

"This interfacial OH production does not involve precursors or catalysts, such as light or heat, and is likely the largest aqueous OH source in atmospheric droplets at nighttime. The ubiquity of aqueous aerosols and cloud droplets and their possibly strong OH-producing capability suggests that we have to rethink atmospheric multiphase oxidation chemistry"
