Die Altstadt von Mazara del Vallo windet sich eng und labyrinthisch durch Gassen, die von normannisch-arabischen Einflüssen geprägt sind. Viele Gebäude stammen aus dem 17. Jhd, als die Stadt unter karthagischer, später römischer Herrschaft stand. Balustraden, Portale und stuckverzierte Fenster zeugen von dieser Vermischung, die Siziliens Geschichte so einzigartig macht.

Golden Tuscan sunlight skimmed the rooftops as we wandered this Florentine street, ochre façades, shuttered windows, and a lone marble column crowned by a cross catching the late-day glow. A papal-crest statue clung to the corner of one building, reminding us just how much history slips into every view. Hard to believe scenes like this were just casual stops on the Italian cruise I shared with my best travel buddy.

Lazy afternoon light drenched this Florentine street in gold, pale ochre façades, rows of open shutters, and a lone marble column topped with a cross standing sentinel against a cloudless sky.
