Cobbled road surfaces are often older than those covered with setts, and the latter largely replaced the former during the 19th Century. As a result, cobbled surfaces are relatively rare in Glasgow, much of which was built after setts became commonplace. This may explain why these ones can be found alongside the canal, which was constructed at the end of the 18th century.
