Fuel, passengers grouped on fewer flights to save kerosene

UK airlines authorized to group passengers from different flights onto the same aircraft to save fuel. The war in the Middle East is causing a severe shortage of oil, gasoline, diesel, and even kerosene. To avoid repercussions during the summer, the peak tourist season, the British Department for Transport is implementing a temporary amendment to regulations to allow carriers to consolidate flights on routes where there are more journeys to the same destination on the same day. This means fewer planes take off but all are full and without penalties for those who have booked their tickets, who will, in some cases, only need to shift their departure by a few hours.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander stated that “there are no immediate supply issues, but we are preparing now to give families the long-term certainty and avoid unnecessary disruption at the departure gate this summer.” “This rule – she added – will give airlines the tools to adjust flights in time if necessary, which helps to protect schedules that would risk being canceled.” However, the decision has sparked controversy from the Conservative Party, led by Keir Starmer, criticizing the risk that passengers will be “packed onto a different plane than the one they chose, at an hour decided by the airline.” “It would be honest to say that the UK is exposed to fuel supply risks that a properly energy-secure country should not face,” commented Tory member Richard Holden.
