Here's a curly question; anyone here understand enough Mandarin Chinese and Te Reo Māori to tell me the Māori equivalent of "guanxi"?

The word "mana" is in the same ballpark, but as I understand it, that's more equivalent to "ahimsa" in the Ghandian context ("soul force"). "Utu" ("reciprocity") is a closely related concept, but my understanding of guanxi is that it's the respect a person has, and the favours they can call in, because of the reciprocity principle.

#Guānxì (关系) is a system of beliefs in Chinese culture that shapes how reciprocity is built through personal ties and mutual obligations, and is a defining feature of how China's #diplomatic partnerships.

While guānxì should theoretically give African countries leverage in their Chinese engagements, African leaders tend to use this reciprocity to obligate their Chinese partners to invest in leaders’ personal projects.

Guānxì: Power, Networking, and Influence in China-Africa Relations – Africa Center for Strategic Studies

China-Africa relations thrive on interpersonal ties of mutual dependence, obligations, and reciprocity that African elites tend to skew to their benefit at the expense of the public interest.
