Great Barrington, Massachusetts’ Andrew Emerald arrested after threats Donald Trump

A federal investigation into a series of online threats has culminated in the arrest of Andrew D. Emerald, 45, of Great Barrington, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, United States. He was taken into custody following a tense confrontation with law enforcement officials at his residence. He now faces an eight-count federal indictment for the interstate transmission of threatening communications directed at 47th U.S. president Donald Trump, 79, of Palm Beach, Florida, USA.

The investigation and social media threats

The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s involvement began after a concerned citizen reported Emerald’s Facebook activity. According to court documents, the tipster had warned Emerald that threatening a sitting president was a federal crime. In response, Emerald allegedly boasted that he had been making such threats online for over a decade. He reportedly added a chilling ultimatum for law enforcement: “I’ll kill them until they kill me.”

The indictment highlights a string of posts made between May 2025 and July 2025. In one instance, Emerald allegedly vowed to travel to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach to carry out an assassination if the president was still alive by 2026. Another post from July 2025 specifically referenced a bladed weapon, with the Great Barrington man allegedly stating his intent to use a sword against the president.

The standoff at Christian Hill Commons

At around 6:47 a.m. on April 1, 2016, FBI agents and Great Barrington Police Department officers arrived at Emerald’s apartment at Christian Hill Commons in Great Barrington to execute an arrest warrant. The situation quickly escalated when he refused to surrender, barricading himself inside the unit.

During the standoff, Emerald appeared in view of the agents while brandishing a long, metallic sword. According to an FBI affidavit, he told agents they would have to shoot him before he would allow himself to be locked up. Local police advised the public to avoid the area as a crisis negotiation team was deployed. The situation was ultimately resolved peacefully after a police officer reached Emerald by phone and convinced him to surrender. Following his arrest, a search of the premises led to the seizure of several bladed weapons.

Legal proceedings and political context

Emerald made an initial appearance in federal court in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts where he pleaded not guilty to all charges. He is currently being held without bail pending a detention hearing scheduled for April 6, 2026. His next significant court date is set for June 10, 2026.

Political consultants note that this case highlights the constant nature of threats monitored by national security agencies. This arrest follows a pattern of heightened security concerns for political figures. Recent years have seen a rise in such incidents, including a man from Virginia, USA sentenced to two years for death threats in early 2025 and a high-profile assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, USA in July 2024. These events have reportedly forced a shift in how politicians manage their personal security details in an increasingly volatile digital and physical landscape.
