@ApaulD
This govt reticence to apply a #GasExportTax or a #SuperProfitTax is not only despicable and a slap in the face of every #Australian, it’s also making a strong case for a call to #EndPoliticalDonations

We cannot have our Parliamentary Representative in the pocket of #ExtractiveIndustries or any #Corporation or #PrivateEnterprises or indeed championing an economic system that has, and is still proving it doesn’t work for the better interests of society as a whole.

Time for a for a #progressiveREvolution at the #VotingBooths people. Use your vote, use your brain put all Australians before your self interests and we might get out OK on the other side.

#AlboPM, you’re a traitor to the people who put you there in good faith.

#AsuPol

As if we don’t have enough #Grifters making a pile on #Australia ‘s slack #TaxRevenue from #GasExports here is another one to add to that pile:

“Amid renewed debate over whether Australia is getting enough tax from its gas exports, an investigation by the ABC shows how one LNG producer uses Singapore to help boost its profits.

That company is Shell, the global oil and gas super major, which is the world’s largest trader of the fuel.

Over the eight years to 2024, Shell’s LNG trading and marketing arm in Singapore made billions of dollars in profit. And it did so by buying LNG from producer countries such as Australia before on-selling the gas at a significant mark-up.”

I wonder how many more #FossilFuel #TaxEvasionSchemes are operating that we don’t know about. Wake up #AlboPM we’re all being had here!

A tropical tax paradise sells much of Australia's gas

Amid renewed debate over whether Australia is getting enough tax from its gas exports, an investigation by the ABC shows how resource giants use shell companies to shift profit.

Indeed, how can this be? The answer is simple: Because #AlboPM wishes it so… Why? Well, that’s a whole other question isn’t it?

“The Japanese Government raises $8 billion per year from its Petroleum and Coal Tax, including around $710 million from imports of Australian gas.

By contrast, the Australian Government is currently getting around $420 million per year from gas exporters paying Petroleum Resource Rent Tax (PRRT). Prior to 2023, it was receiving zero. Nada. Nothing.

In other words, the Australian Government is getting less money from our gas exports than Japan is.

State and territory governments also raise money from gas, especially Queensland which expects to get $1.2 billion this financial year (page 64) from its onshore deposits.

But most of Australia’s gas exports come from massive offshore deposits owned by the Federal Government. This means that even though far more federally owned gas is exported, Queensland’s government (like Japan’s!) raises more money.

How can this be?”

How the Japanese Government taxes Australian gas

The Australian Government is getting less money from our gas exports than Japan is. How can this be?

The Point

@gusseting
Yes it does and truly shows us a model to emulate. Prob is for Australia to emulate the Danes, the govt would need to be a shareholder with a controling interest (51%+) and there is little appetive for such an investment in any current political party/groups or even independent. But legislating a #GasExportTax is fully within the govt’s remit. And there the problem is with our politicians’ adherence to the flawed #NeoLiberalism that favours unfetted capitalism and deregulated markets.

Change our govt with no major parties able to govt without #Greens and #Indies and we’d have a real shot at this…

@HardBeingGreen

Non-profit coop housing has been working for decades in Europe. It is no different from good govt social housing , also working well in Europe for decades (I spent my early years there in social housing in the late 50s early 60s). Long term agreements in some schems are also decades long and a few are no different from home ownership passed on to kids.

It’s all doable, cost effective, socially responsible and a godsend to low wage workers and those who can least afford housing (there is still the issue of waiting lists because there’s never enough …)

Current housing issues in Australia, just like poverty in Australia IS A POLITICAL DECISION. The sooner the electorate understands this, the sooner we can fix it at the ballot box.

‘Not the right time’? Why Albanese’s safety first is no longer enough

Anthony Albanese ruling out a tax on gas companies, with a narrative adopted by the incurious that it is “not the right time” because of the “global sensitivities” is not good policy or even a smart one. It is, however, what he considers to be a safe one, helped along by a media narrative that presents keeping the status quo as the “sensible” choice.

Act before commodities boom leaves us bust, urges former Treasury boss

Former Treasury boss Ken Henry says the under-taxed resources sector has hollowed out Australia's economy, and raising more revenue from the sale of LNG resources was in the national interest.
