Japan on-sells almost twice as much gas as Australians consume

Gas companies argue that a 25% gas export tax would threaten Japan’s energy supply - this is nonsense.

The Point

@froomkin The same is happening here in Australia where we were told ystdy there will be a shortfall in gas (as in liquified natural gas, not petrol) supply this winter, June-Sep. Current policy is that 65% is exported whilst the domestic market is depleted. Lunacy.

Our national regulator, the ACCC, is advising govt to intervene, but do far it hasn't. https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/lng-exporters-must-divert-gas-to-the-domestic-market-to-avoid-shortfalls

LNG exporters must divert gas to the domestic market to avoid shortfalls

The ACCC’s July 2022 Interim gas report, released today, forecasts the east coast of Australia could face a shortfall of 56 PJ in 2023. At the same time last year, our Gas Inquiry interim report found 2022 could face a 2PJ shortfall. “Our latest gas report finds that the outlook for the east coast gas market has significantly worsened. To protect energy security on the east coast we are recommending the Resources Minister initiate the first step of the Australian Domestic Gas Security Mechanism (ADGSM),” ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb said.
