And yet, language teaching program after program have identical structures, identical course sequences, identical syllabi. You can go almost anywhere in the world and learn almost the exact same things in your language teacher training program, even if it's a grad program.

And almost never do those things include HOW TO MOVE STUDENTS FROM 0 TO FLUENCY IN THE TIME WE HAVE WITH THEM.

Which is, like, our only job.

So then you have to ask: how can an entire profession, present in every school around the world, practiced for hundreds of years, be mostly unsuccessful?

Either:
🫩We don't care
or
😶‍🌫️we don't actually want it to be successful

Worth sitting with those options for a moment... Who benefits? Whose power is reinforced? Whose dominance is preserved? 🧠💭
