Wondering if Mastodon is really the right space for me. Even with 10,000 characters, my last post still felt cramped. I have so much to say, and trying to pour that into any fixed container is a challenge. Perhaps Substack suits my long-form tendencies better. Is lengthy content considered poor etiquette here? Genuinely curious what others think.

Hey all

Firstly, apologies for writing this post 😔

We're glad that you are getting or were able to get the gender-affirming surgeries that you need(ed). Everybody should have access to the healthcare that they need.

Nonetheless, please may we kindly ask you to remember to add content warnings to your posts? 🥺

We're not asking you to hide your joy, your excitement, your gender euphoria, your experiences, or anything like that: we're asking you to please remember that many of us cannot get the gender-affirming surgeries that they need and may have no realistic prospects of ever being able to do so 😞

Adding a CW and using standard phrases, just like you would for other topics like politics, gives folks the option of viewing or not viewing your posts.

And no: using a euphemistic way to describe it (e.g., "Taco Tuesday") instead of adding a CW doesn't make it any less potentially-triggering to some of us who know what the euphemism means.

We're SO sorry for asking this.

We've added SO many bleeping filters to try to block everything out, but posts are still finding their way through 😭

We're genuinely SO sorry that we cannot celebrate your happiness and joy right now.

We're genuinely SO sorry that it hurts us to see others getting what they need, when we cannot even get the most basic surgical options.

We're sorry again that we've had to write this post, because we don't want to bring down anybody else's joy.

And we're sorry that we cannot be there for you if you are asking for help in relation to anything related to such matters.

Thank you

One thing I wish was a part of etiquette on my federated servers:

News items that are "powerful person says stupid thing" can still be tagged as politics or put under CW.

People are good about tagging "powerful person says scary thing" - and I'm asking for the same treatment regardless of how Thing makes you feel.

Your schadenfreude is my letsnotrightnow.

A #FediEtiquette question:

I see an account like this and to me it's at best suspicious, at worse clickbait mixed with misinformation.

But.

I'm not 100% sure this breaks what is allowed 'here', for some definition of here.

So the question is: should I report it or just block myself?

Richard Porson (1759 - 1808) offers wisdom on Fediverse etiquette. Samuel Rogers in his Tabletalks and Recollections (1859) quotes this:

"Had I a carriage, and did I see a well-dressed person on the road, I would always invite him in, and learn of him what I could."

Clearly:
- "carriage" = "my Fedi account";
- "well-dressed person" = "a pleasant Fedi participant";
- "invite him in" = "boost their posts and follow their account".

Hello, Fediverse!

I feel it is probably inappropriate to ask this as a reply to another post.

What is a Reply Guy?

What does a #ReplyGuy post look like?
(Label any example replies, please!)

How do I avoid making them by accident? I assume people that make Reply Guy posts are probably oblivious to what they're doing.

I am asking as a preventative measure, so I can reply without being perceived as a nuisance participant.

PSA

Hello dear friends. This is fediverse.

Undesired comments with constructive critisism are welcome.

But if your opinion was not specifically asked for and you don't have anything positive to say:

you can switch off your device and go for a walk or do whatever it is that makes you tick.

If upsetting people is what makes you tick, consider yourself blocked with no questions asked.

Because we are not the droids you are looking for.

Been seeing a lot of folks coming in with panic about lack of interactions in #fediverse

You don't go, as an example, to a weekend convention with 50000 people and expect to have 49000 people waiting to share a shower with you on monday.

Calm down and scream in to the void. You'll find friends eventually. Except if you are a racist bigot.

Oh and you have to use #hashtags.

I strongly recommend everybody, just once in a while, to scroll through the federated timeline.

You'll find interesting gems, since not everyone chooses to use hashtags.

I've found great #people , #photography, #jokes, #news , etc

I follow people back who follow me (unless they seem like a bot or creepy), and I follow people I find interesting. If you happen to listen to my music and like it, that's awesome! But like I say in my bio, I'm here to make friends, not cynically presume everyone follows me solely b/c of my music.
Only about 20% of my IRL friends are fans of my music, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
