FDA approves first nasal spray for severe allergic reactions

Neffy is an Rx epinephrine nasal spray for adults and children weighing at least 66 lbs for the treatment of anaphylactic shock.

'...the drug is meant to be available about eight weeks from the FDA approval.

In terms of cost, the fee is about $200 out of pocket.

"For people who are on commercial insurance, the cost is going to be limited to about $25," Gounder said. "And then for people who are underinsured or uninsured, it's going to be made no cost for at least some of them, which is really important, because 40% of kids in the United States are on Medicaid or public insurance.'

FDA approves first nasal spray for severe allergic reactions. Here's what to know.

The nasal spray "Neffy" is the first needle-free option for severe allergic reactions that the FDA has approved. The spray would be an alternative to EpiPens.

What do you know about Epipens?

I have one now!

Data on using #medications beyond their printed #ExpirationDates. TL;DR: the FDA requires a date at which it is guaranteed to have at least 90% of active drug. Many drugs retain full potency long past that. See article for a few specifics. #epinephrine #albuterol

More on Using Expired Medications

"#Monoamines like #serotonin, #dopamine, and #adrenaline/noradrenaline (#epinephrine/norepinephrine) act as #neuromodulators in the nervous system.. However, the evolutionary origin of the genes required for monoaminergic modulation is uncertain. Using a phylogenomic approach, in this study, we show that most of the genes involved in monoamine production, modulation, and reception originated in the #bilaterian stem group."

The monoaminergic system is a bilaterian innovation - Nature Communications

Monoamines act as neuromodulators in the nervous system, but their evolutionary origins are unclear. Here, the authors examine the evolution of genes involved in monoamine production, and processing suggesting that the monoaminergic system evolved in the bilaterian stem-group.

I’m a retired allergist & agree w every word https://prospect.org/blogs-and-newsletters/tap/2023-08-07-eminent-domain-overpriced-drugs/

An #epinephrine auto-injector can be the difference between life or death. When needed a second dose is required often enough that guidelines recommend ALWAYS having 2 available… at $600 each! That’s a burden for many patients: Spending $1200 each yr or 2 (expiration dates!) for drugs they usually never use if they remain vigilant.

As the article says these are old tech & generic epinephrine. Criminal #pharma greed at work!

Eminent Domain for Overpriced Drugs

Today on TAP: Exhibit A is the case of the EpiPen. It should cost a few dollars rather than the $600 or more charged by monopolist Viatris.

I learned the hard way that U.S. airlines are not currently required to have EpiPens

"Anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction, is a life-threatening medical emergency and has to be treated with epinephrine as soon as possible. The glass vial of epinephrine planes carry is hard to use, and administering it safely involves multiple time-consuming steps that require medical knowledge."

I learned the hard way that U.S. airlines are not currently required to have EpiPens

Since 2016, airlines have been able to apply for “emergency” exemptions to the requirement that they carry epinephrine for anaphylaxis. That needs to end.
